It implements services and actions aiming at facilitating the search for information for the regional and international scientific community, the research of scientific and technique information in the Agropolis International network. STI Commission manages a service portal providing: • An easier users flow, by a better access to all libraries • Catalog of periodicals: paper or electronic • Catalog of databanks and where they can be consulted • Study days and sharing experiences. These sessions are opened to the whole profession in the region, through the librarian and documentation specialist association ADBS. A single access catalog http://www.bomlr.info/
For information scientists as well as users the first requirement was a single access to academic resources from the Languedoc Roussillon region. Of course, each library has its own catalog, managed by its own software, adapted to its users. The choice of a metasearch software was made to perform simultaneous searching through 31 library catalogs, giving access to 1,5 millions of bibliographic references and allowing location of 18 000 periodicals titles. Agropolis International, the European University Complex and the Inter-University Library of Montpellier have signed a convention to pool their facilities for this project as an example of the inter-institutional functions performed by Agropolis International and supported by the local authority Languedoc-Roussillon Region. Three steps have been completed to lead to the building up of a single joint facility (the analysis of requirements, a comparative study and the testing of technical solutions available in 2002). The AskOnce program developed by Xerox Corporation was tested and chosen. This on line single query interface to have access to heterogeneous content was adapted in order to connect heterogeneous library catalogs (whatever the size, thematic cover, bibliographic format, software) and leave them intact on their sites, thus respecting the solution of each institution. The metasearch software supports various search protocols (HTTP,Z3950) ; it is based on a powerful query language that relies on a rich set of metadata (title, author, keywords, full-text) and advanced operators. The AskOnce technology boosts the decision process by transforming long lists of search results into organized information, it automatically groups search results into categories that are intelligently created out of the words and phrases displayed (clustering). This system results in considerable time-saving in bibliographic searches. Accessible from the outside, it aims to enhancing the scientific and technical information potential of training and research institutions in South of France. To go further and give access to full-text documents, we plan to use this technology to reach the publication repositories of each establishment. A regional documentary portal for scientific information http://ist.agropolis.fr/ Five main headings: • Information on active projects • Help for library user education. • Directory of documentation centres, classified by name or subjects. • Directory of resources for 400 databanks (to know where to find them). • The agenda for meetings, educational training, etc. The first two headings are related to work on ongoing projects. One of the ongoing project is the organization of the next IAALD 13th World Congress, 26-29 April 2010
